    By 1906, Los Angeles had an extensive commuter rail system with over 1000 miles of track. The notable Pacific Electric lines of commuter railroad “Red Cars” are shown in red. A complex streetcar system served Central Los Angeles (outlined in yellow). The last pre-Metro commuter train in Los Angeles traveled to Long Beach, but ceased operations in 1961.
